How Martial Arts and Stoicism Improve Mindset
What is Amor Fati and How Does it Relate to Martial Arts?
At the Budo Shingikan Dojo in Mesa, Arizona we pride ourselves on being more than your typical dojo. Everything we do and teach our students transcends the idea of martial arts as it’s practiced here in the west.
We are two days into 2020, and we all have so much to be grateful for.
I’m fortunate enough to be surrounded by people each day, who inspire and motivate me to be better and that includes my students.
But, we can be grateful for other things beyond people and possessions. In fact, we can be grateful, we can even fall in love with what happens to us. The idea of amor fati is powerful and I think is a liberating way to view life.
This Latin phrase basically means, “love of fate”. This idea is something in which my students have learned through all the training, all the belt tests, and all the individual critiques.
Why a Proper Mindset is POWERFUL?
It’s a way of thought, a way of shifting your mindset towards “things” happening FOR YOU, not to you.
Amor fati helps us become outcome independent and live happily with what has been placed right in front of us regardless of the situation that has been presented to us.
If something in the dojo didn’t work out the way you thought or the way we thought, it now becomes a teachable or learning moment. That technique is not working… no problem. Let’s examine WHY it’s not working, let’s break it down, and fix it.
That’s the beauty of martial arts and how amor fati can work together harmoniously, as you can see by the simple example above.
Mistakes are a Blessing
Our mistakes aren’t happening “to us” but rather “for us”. Now, let’s see how this concept goes beyond the dojo and into your everyday life.
You didn’t get that job promotion? … I love it. It means something greater awaits but YOU must still press on. You see, amor fati and martial arts at this point are working together.
Through the challenges you had to overcome in training you now have the mental fortitude to press on and when coupled with the mindset of amor fati… nothing can keep you from progress.
What You Can and Cannot Control
Everything that happens “for us” we have no control over. This is a fact that we must come to terms with and is one of the many life lessons we teach at Budo Shingikan Dojo.
How we react to them; however is 100% in our control.
Knowing how to shift your mindset to accept the things that are happening to us in a way that we actually fall in love with them and training your mind to push through adversity through martial arts training is a magical thing.
2020, here we come!
Fall in love with your fate and fall in love with martial arts!
